Formation and destruction processes of interstellar dust grains and evolution of their size distribution 講師Speaker:野沢貴也 氏 (国立天文台 理論研究部) 日時:11月18日(火) 午後1時半 〜 Date: Tuesday, November 18th, 2014 starting at 1:30 p.m. Title:Obscuration of AGNs: Implications from Radiation-driven Fountain 講師Speaker:Keiichi Wada 氏 (Kagoshima University) 日時:11月14日(金) 午後4時 〜 Date: Friday, November 14th, 2014 starting at 4:00 p.m. 概要Abstract: In the classical picture of AGNs, a dusty molecular "torus" is postulated. It has been believed that the torus plays a key role in obscuring emission from nucleus, but its physical origin and structures have not been clearly understood. Recently we proposed a dynamic model of the obscuring material, which is driven by the radiation from the AGN (Wada 2012; Schartmann et al. 2014). I shall introduce details of the model, and discuss general properties of the obscuration based on this model as well as on a starburst-driven thick disk, which should be important to understand statistical properties of high-z AGNs. A recent progress in the model, in which non-equilibrium chemistry is solved to understand molecular dynamics, is also discussed. Title:Swift J1753.5-0127: the black hole in the mass gap? 講師Speaker:Vitaly Neustroev 氏 (University of Oulu, Finland) 日時:10月29日(水) 午後1時半 〜 Date: Wednesday, October 29th, 2014 starting at 1:30 p.m. 概要Abstract: The black hole (BH) candidate SWIFT J1753.5-0127 has remained active since the onset of its 2005 outburst. Emission lines in the optical spectrum were observed at the very beginning of the outburst, but since then the spectrum has been featureless making a precise BH mass estimation impossible. Here we present results from our optical and UV observations of SWIFT J1753.5-0127 taken in 2012-2013. Our new observations show extremely broad, double-peaked emission lines in the optical and UV spectra. The optical data also show narrow absorption and emission features with nearly synchronous and significant Doppler motions. A radial velocity study of these lines which we associate with the secondary star, yields a semi-amplitude of K_2=382 km/s. A time-series analysis of the spectral and photometric data revealed a possible orbital periodicity of 2.85 h, significantly shorter than the reported 3.2 h periodic signal by Zurita et al. (2008). The observed variability properties argue against a low orbital inclination angle and we present several observational arguments in favour of the BH interpretation. However, the measured radial velocity semi-amplitude of the donor star and the short orbital period imply that SWIFT J1753.5-0127 has one of the lowest measured mass function for a BH in a low-mass X-ray binary. We show that the compact object mass in excess of 5 Msun is highly improbable. Thus, SWIFT J1753.5-0127 is a BH binary that has one of the shortest orbital period and hosts probably one of the smallest stellar-mass BH found to date. Currently there are about two dozens of X-ray transients thought to contain a black hole with reliable dynamical confirmation. Interestingly that the observed distribution of compact object masses has a double-peak structure at ~1.5 Msun and ~7.8 Msun for neutron stars and BHs, correspondingly, with a gap in the mass range 2-5 Msun. The obtained BH mass of SWIFT J1753.5-0127 puts this binary right into the 2-5 Msun gap. This conclusion has a strong impact on BH formation scenarios which we discuss. Title:The Extreme Growth of Super-Massive Black Holes and their Host Galaxies at High Redshift 講師Speaker:Benny Trakhtenbrot 氏 (ETH Zurich) 日時:10月23日(木) 午後4時 〜 Date: Thursday, October 23th, 2014 starting at 4:00 p.m. 概要Abstract: The observed evolution of black hole (BH) mass and accretion rates at all accessible redshifts suggests that the most massive BHs (M_BH~10^10 Msun) were already in place at z~3 and that the epoch of fastest growth for such extreme systems must have occurred earlier still. However, any links between such fast-growing, supper-massive black Holes and their host galaxies are not yet established at these high redshifts. I will focus on our team's recent results for a large sample of luminous, un-obscured AGNs, that were shown to represent an epoch of fast, nearly Eddington-limited growth from a wide range of seed masses, and may produce some of the most massive black holes known to date (M_BH > 10^10 Msun) before z~4. Using recent Herschel observations, we reveal extremely intense FIR emission (L_FIR>10^13 Lsun) in ~25% of the sources, corresponding to SFRs of 1000-4000 Msun/yr. These extreme SFRs are comparable to the highest observed values at any redshift, found in sub-mm galaxies. Moreover, stacking analysis for the remaining sources results in a mean SFR of ~450 Msun/yr. A probable scenario is that we are witnessing the peak of SF activity in some sources and the beginning of the post-starburst decline in others. AGN feedback may be responsible for diminishing the SF activity in ~75% of them, but is not operating efficiently in the Herschel-detected sources. An alternative scenario is that only the high-SFR AGN hosts are powered by major mergers. I will also mention how our follow up ALMA observations may test the relevance of major mergers to the fueling of these unique systems. Title:Monte Carlo radiative transfer code SKIRT and the AGN dusty torus 講師Speaker:Marko Stalevski 氏 日時:10月15日(水) 午後1時半 〜 Date: Wednesday, October 15th, 2014 starting at 1:30 p.m. 概要Abstract: I will start by briefly presenting the problem of radiative transfer in dusty astrophysical environments, followed by an overview of SKIRT, the state-of-the-art radiative transfer code based on the Monte Carlo technique. I will present some of the applications of the code, focusing on the modeling of the dusty, obscuring structures in active galactic nuclei ( AGN). This structure -- dubbed 'the dusty torus' -- has a major effect on how the AGN looks like, and although the basic picture has been clear for some time, there are still many unresolved issues. We offered a new model of the dusty torus as clumpy two-phase medium, in which high-density clumps are immersed in a smooth dusty medium of much lower density. I will finish by reporting some of our findings from the modeling of the dusty torus infrared emission and outlining our current efforts in understanding these structures. Title:Ionized Gas Kinematics at High Resolution and the Evolution of Super Star Clusters 講師Speaker:Sara Beck 氏 (Tel Aviv University) 日時:10月2日(木) 午後4時半 〜 Date: Thursday, October 2nd, 2014 starting at 4:30 p.m. 概要Abstract: The most intense star formation sites in the nearby Universe are the young super star clusters in starburst galaxies. They contain hundreds or thousands of OB stars but are less than a few parsec across. They are optically invisible, embedded in dense molecular gas and dust, and excite supernebulae: HII regions of great radio and infrared luminosity. The kinematics of these regions are difficult: how can dense (n_e ~ 10^{4-6}) and hot ionized gas, with velocities as high as a few 100 km/sec, be confined to such small volumes? How do they survive, and what do they do to the surrounding clouds? We study these regions using high resolution spectra of the mid-infrared lines of metal ions. Very high spectral resolution is possible with metal ions because they have less thermal broadening than H^+; our spectra have data true resolution of 3-5 km/sec. From the high-resolution data we trace the interaction of the ionized gas with the ambient material and see how embedded star clusters develop and how they affect their environment. Title:The Weather around Active Galactic Nuclei - From X-rays to IR 講師Speaker:Robert Nikutta 氏 (Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Santiago) 日時:7月29日(火) 午後4時 〜 Date: Tuesday, July 29th, 2014 starting at 4:00 p.m. 概要Abstract: Analyzing 16 years of X-ray observations in AGN with RXTE, we found 12 secure eclipse events and several candidates. In a recent paper (Markowitz, Krumpe, Nikutta, 2014, MNRAS 439) we show that these events are discrete gas+dust clouds crossing our line of sight. Due to RXTE's long mission duration, it was sensitive to eclipses caused by clouds much further away from their AGN than previous events, which have been observed with e.g. XMM/Newton and Chandra. Our clouds are located both in the BLR and also well into the dusty part of the cloud distribution, within the AGN "torus". Because the number of events found by RXTE is quite large, we were able to perform a statistical analysis, and derive "instantaneous" probabilities to observe an AGN in an obscured state. In several type-2 AGN we also see a non-varying absorber at timescales of up to 8 years, which can be either a homogeneous medium, or discrete clouds of column density N_H<<10^22 cm^-2 each. Both scenarios call for an update to state-of-art AGN torus models. In a follow-up paper (Nikutta, Krumpe, Markowitz, in preparation) we constrain the properties of the clouds further, and test the predictions of most recent AGN torus models. Using Bayesian inference together with the CLUMPY model (Nenkova et al. 2008a+b, ApJ 685), we can derive most of the parameters that govern the distribution of clouds in the BLR and in the torus. This provides a natural connection between the AGN X-ray signal and the Infrared emission, a signature of the dusty AGN torus. I will show how using the large WISE catalog we can reliably identify type-1 and type-2 AGN through their IR properties, putting AGN unification to the test. Title:The Central Engine of Gamma Ray Bursts 講師Speaker:Sachiko Tsuruta 氏 (Montana State University) 日時:6月10日(火) 午後1時30分 〜 Date: Tuesday, June 10th, 2014 starting at 1:30 p.m. 概要Abstract: Gamma ray bursts (GRB) are among the most energetic phenomena in the universe. We begin with a brief introduction to GRB in general. Then we will proceed to progress reports on our current and future projects, on more specific problems concerning the central engine of GRB as a collapser. We are interested in an unified model of the central engine of GRB, from the outermost supernova regime through the intermediate region with a relativistic accretion torus into the innermost region around the central black hole where general relativity will be critical. We also explore the accerelation of jets from a black hole-torus system by magnetic reconnection and the mechanism of energy extraction from a spinning black hole. The main emphasis will be to obtain useful input from the audience, rather than to offer any concrete results. 第508回 題目Title:Polarimetry of Active Galactic Nuclei 講師Speaker:Enrique Lopez Rodriguez 氏 (University of Texas, San Antonio) 日時:4月25日(金) 午後4時30分 〜 Date: Friday, April 25th, 2014 starting at 4:30 p.m. 概要Abstract: Magnetohydrodynamical theories consider the torus of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) to be part of an outflow wind moving away from the central engine. In this framework, the torus is a particular region of the wind, where dusty and optically thick clouds are formed. The outflows are strongly related to the accretion rate and magnetic field strength, which play an important role in the creation, morphology and evolution of the torus. Through high-angular (~0.1"-0.6") infrared (IR, 1-13 um) polarimetry observations, this work (1) explores the role and strength of magnetic field in the torus; (2) studies the AGN/Host galaxy connection; and (3) investigates the nucleus of radio-loud AGN. Although several models have been made to account for the outflowing dusty winds from the central engine, the magnetic field strength at the position of the torus remains poorly characterized. Through a novel study using near-IR polarimetry, the magnetic field strength within the clumpy torus of AGN are estimated. For the archetypical radio-loud AGN, Cygnus A, mid-IR imaging polarimetry using CanariCam (8-13 um) on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias revealed a high polarized, 11+-3% and 11+-3% (at 8.7 um and 11.6 um respectively) unresolved nucleus. Polarimetric modeling suggests that the MIR polarization arises from a synchrotron component. This result represents the most compelling MIR polarization detection of synchrotron radiation in Cygnus A. 第507回 題目Title:SPACE AND EARTHS CLIMATE 講師Speaker:Henrik Svensmark 氏 (Technical University of Denmark) 日時:4月2日(水) 午後2時00分 〜 Date: Wednesday, April 2nd, 2014 starting at 2:00 p.m. 概要Abstract: Variations in Earth’s climate suggest that the atmosphere is capable of amplifying small changes in solar activity. One possible explanation is an influence on the atmospheric transparency by changing cloud properties via cosmic ray ionization (the latter is modulated by solar activity). Initial support for this idea is found from satellite observations of low liquid clouds (< 3 km). The proposed mechanism involve ion induced formation and growth of aerosol particles (0.001- 1 mu in diameter) that subsequently can act as cloud condensation nuclei. Observations of the whole chain from solar activity in the form of coronal mass ejections, to cosmic ray decrease, to aerosol production, to cloud cover will be presented. For some years a contentious issue has been whether our planet's ever-changing location in the Galaxy and associated variations in the influx of galactic cosmic rays have influenced its climate and life over geological time scales. Previous studies have indicated a coincidence between the passages of the Sun through spiral arms of the Galaxy and glaciations during the last 500 Ma. The present study directly estimates the changing birth rate of clusters from a sample of open stellar clusters in the solar neighborhood. From this the formation rates of massive supernova progenitors as a function of time is estimated. The supernova rates are compared with geological data on past climates, biodiversity and the carbon cycle. It is found that astrophysical processes responsible for star formation in the solar neighborhood are fundamental for the conditions of life on Earth. The suggested mechanism involves an initial impact of variable galactic cosmic ray influx on climate, and subsequent changes in the nutrient and carbon cycle.
