Structure and star formation in galaxies out to z=3 : evidence for surface density dependent evolution and upsizing(arXiv:0808.2642)

• High redshift (0.2 < z < 3.5)

  GOODS-CDF-South 138 arcmin² K<22.5 (S/N>10)

  0.5<z<3.5, z_phot - z_spec = 0.03 (0.05 @z>1)
  　(K-band が 4000Å break よりも長波長になるように)

  GALFIT(Peng et al. 2002) で測光
  PSF は FWHM=0".45
  0".12 (1kpc @z=2) 以上の広がりの size を検出
  BC03 τ=0(instantaneous), 0.3Gyr, ∞(constant) で fit, Mass を算出
  Calzetti extinction A_v= 0-4
  Salpeter IMF での結果に 10^-0.2(=0.63) をかけて Kroupa IMF に変換
  現在の SFR は Kroupa IMF を仮定したときの値：0.98x10^-10(L_IR + 3.3 L₂₈₀₀) Mo/yr
  　SFR の error は 1Mo/yr(@z=1), 5Mo/yr(@z=2), 25Mo/yr(@z=3)

  若干の offset あり：SFR(UV+MIPS)/SFR(SED) = 0.77(@z=1), 1.29(@z=2), 2.8(@z=3)
  z=3 では相関が悪い ⇒ 8μm PAH feature が MIPS 24μm に入ってくるため？
  MIPS flux から算出した SFR は大きくなることが多いが、今回はそういう傾向は見られず
  (X で受かったものは AGN であるとし、sample には入れていない)
  とりあえず z>3 でも UV+MIPS SFR を用いるが、大き目に見積っている可能性も顧慮する

• Low redshift sample: SDSS

  Abazajian et al. 2004 では中心核の fiber spectra から M/L を算出しているが、
  10^1.7Δ(g-r) (Δ(g-r)=(g-r)_petrosian-(g-r)_fiber)で銀河全体の M/L に変換
  petrosian aperture の外側の光も顧慮するため、sersic fits (Blanton et al. 2003)も利用
  0.05<z<0.07 21722天体(近傍での aperture bias 遠方での selection effect を避けるため)

  軽い銀河は high-z では青くなっていくが、重い銀河は赤いまま
  75% completeness line より左上側の軽くて赤い銀河が少ないのは incompleteness によるもの
  10¹⁰-10¹¹ の銀河の色(SFR)は様々で統一性はない

  low-z では重い銀河の方が大きいが、high-z ではその傾向は小くなる
  scatter はどの z でも大きい

• Mass-size-color relation

  sample を mass 毎に細分化し、C-r_e 関係を調べてみる

  赤い銀河は compact で、青い銀河は広がっている
  z〜2 までは同様に分布しているようだが z〜3 は sample が少なすぎて良くわからない
  u-g = a(log M - b log r_e)+c
  で表されるものとし、a,b,c を求めてみる
  b = 1.05 or 1.55 (@z=0-1), 0.89 (@z=2), 0.28? (@z=3, selection bias の影響大)
  z<2.5 で b=1-1.5 付近の値を取る ⇒ M/r_e(∝σ²) または M/r_e²(∝面密度) をパラメータとすべき
  inferred velocity dispersion = √(0.3GM/r_e), 面密度と u-g color との関係

  どの z でも赤い銀河は面密度とσが大きく、青い銀河は面密度とσが小さい (z>3 では incomplete)

赤くて軽い high-z 銀河は受かっていないので、実際の進化はもっと速いかも

Implications for galaxy evolution

• General evolution and transformation onto the red sequence

  面密度の大きい銀河は SSFR が小さく古い銀河で、z=2.5 でもこの傾向は同じ
  z=0 での red sequence は z=1.5 では星生成中だが、全てが passive に進化した訳ではない

• Properties of quiescent galaxies out to z=3

  z=2 quiescent galaxy は z=0 と比較してサイズが小さく面密度が大きい
  SSFR < 0.3/t_hubble のものだけで考えると、r_e ∝ (1+z)^-1.09 とかなり速い進化となる
  z=2 quiescent galaxy はそのままでは大きくならない ⇒ 消えてしまったのか？
  (SDSS では小さい銀河を星だと思って逃している可能性があるが...)
  merging で成長したのではないか

• A simple accretion model to explain why blue galaxies are large

  銀河は赤い bulge と青い disk から成る
  ガスが降着した際には外縁部から星生成が始まる ⇒ "inside out" で成長
  高密度銀河では AGN or ガスの衝撃波加熱で星生成が止ることもある
  high-z では銀河周辺の halo が小さい？

• The enigmatic nature of strongly star forming galaxies at z > 1.5

  high-z ほど銀河進化が速い
  @z=1 SSFR = 6x10^-10/yr = 3.5/t_hubble
  @z=2 SSFR = 2x10^-9/yr = 6.7/t_hubble
  r_e とσから orbital time を算出、star formation time と比較

  z<1 では比は 30 以上だが、z>1.5 では 3 程度
  ⇒ high-z では gas が disk 状に落ち着いているとは考えにくい
  面密度と青い光の広がりから gas の量を推定、星質量との比を考える
  ⇒ high-z ほど gas が増える

  重い銀河の大きさの進化 r_e ∝ (1+z)^-0.8 (Fig.11)
  ⇒ ∝ H(z)^-2/3 で、Mo et al.(1998) の disk galaxy evolution と同じ
  軽い銀河の場合はそれよりも進化の遅い Somerville et al. (2008) の model が合う
  どちらにしても、DM halo の scale が銀河の大きさ進化を決めているようだ

今回のサンプルから Hα分光, BM/BX サーベイをシミュレーションすると...

Hαは大きい銀河にやや片寄り、BM/BX だとかなりの bias がかかる
また、青大 → 赤小 という銀河の進化を反映するモデルが無いのも問題
