V4742 Sgr: Nova Sgr 2002 No.2

CCD image taken by B. Monard
W. Liller discovered a new stellar object of about 8.5mag on September
15. Nothing brighter than mag 11.5 appears on two photos taken at September
11 (vsnet-campaign-nova
976, vsnet-campaign-news
172). The probable optical counterpart of this IR source is very
dim even on DSS 2 red plate (r=17.93)(vsnet-campaign-nova
980). C. Buil performed spectroscopy and reported H-alpha emission line
(FWHM=1100km) with a very deep P-Cygni profile, which indicated a young
nova (vsnet-campaign-nova
984). The spectrum taken by M. Fujii on September 17 showed Balmer
lines and Fe II series emission lines, which indicated V4742 Sgr is an
Fe II-class nova (vsnet-campaign-nova
1007, 1008).
H. Yamaoka reported a position of the nova through precise astrometry, which
suggested that no source can be seen on every DSS images within 3" from
the position (vsnet-campaign-nova
993, 1006).
This finding makes a lower limit of the outburst amplitude of ~12 (or
possibly 13) mag. T. Kato commented that this large outburst amplitude
possibly qualifies this object as a fast nova (vsnet-campaign-nova
994).
The fading rate became more gradual with time (vsnet-campaign-nova
1088).
D. West performed BVR photometry and reported that the large B-V indicates
the nova was highly reddened (vsnet-campaign-nova
999). Nova Sgr 2002 No. 2 discovered by W. Liller has been given
the above official permanent designation (V4742 Sgr) in IAUC 7972 (vsnet-campaign-nova
1002).
