Dear SN watchers,
Potentially bright SN was discovered on Aug. 8.5 by Lick group. IAUC 6986 tells that SN 1998dj is located at R.A. = 2h01m06s.92, Decl. = -6 49'04".8 (2000.0), which is about 7" east and 9" south from the core of the lenticular/spiral galaxy NGC 788. This position is well inside of the central core region.
Magnitudes reported till now: Jan. 25.2 >18.0 Aug. 8.5 16.1 Aug. 9.5 16.0
As Dr. Kato mentioned, typical SNeIa on this distance will show 15.4 mag at maximum. USNO-A1.0 based chart will be available at ftp://ftp.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/pub/vsnet/SNe/sn1998dj .
